What server do you get them from?
Do `gnus-group-enter-server-mode' in the group
buffer to see if it is offline. If it is closed
open it up with `gnus-server-open-server'.
I have these groups from nntp.aioe.org and it
seems to work fine, tho I don't use
gnu.emacs.help but gmane.emacs.help (and so on)
these days.
