Is it still possible to post to mailing lists through gmane?  Or is it
just for mailing list archival now?  Thanks!

It is possible, although some people are reporting problems with
responding to the TMDA emails.

Using NNTP only?  Without having to confirm by e-mail?  Is that

Not with Gmane as far as I know, I consider
that part of Gmane. You can use NNTP thru
a Usenet server, of course, e.g. nntp.aioe.org,
and then post to the equivalent newsgroup if
available, e.g. gnu.emacs.help instead of
gmane.emacs.help. Probably the poor man's
solution tho...

Sure.  I do that too.  But I've been considering other mailing lists.
Sounds like Gmane isn't quite right for everyone and I'm one unlucky.

Has anyone investigate public-inbox.org?  Is it just an archive or does
it also allow NNTP posting?

For weeks ago, i also got such message. Maybe there seems an auth
problem of Gmane. By the way Lars is very busy, i think.

AFAIK, Lars is not responsible for Gmane any longer.

The new folks has not got around to do the NNTP+email-part, so Lars is
still running NNTP+email.
