This is actually a nice general functionality to have, and I'd like to
get to it eventually if no one else does. But currently only a few
backends support editing, and nnimap is not one of them.

[-- Attachment #1.1: Type: text/plain, Size: 1354 bytes --]
Hello!
I'm looking for some additional options for organizing my emails.
Splitting rules give me a very coarse-grained organization of my
correspondences, but I'd like to have more flexibility. Call me a
hopeless follower of trends, but the solution I have in mind is to add
tags to my email. This has been done successfully for Apple Mail [1]
and for Thunderbird [2].
One solution seems to be adding headers to mails (either X-tags or
X-keywords). I've tried to do this by just hitting 'e' in the summary
buffer, but get a message that the backend (nnimap) doesn't support
editing. Is there a way to insert new headers into a mail from within
gnus (specifically, one that works for nnimap)?
I'd also like to be able to limit and search by these headers. I hope
that eventually mairix will add the ability to index arbitrary headers
[3], but another approach might be to also store the tags using IMAP's
Keywords. Is there a way to use gnus to add IMAP keywords to a message?
Thanks for any help!
/au

You hopeless follower of trends! <grin>
IIRC Ted Zlatanov proposed to store labels/tags like todo/waiting/done
thru the gnus-registry. Hopefully for 2008.
Another solution would be to use the Gnus bookmark facility with
annotations: (setq gnus-bookmark-use-annotations `t') This lets you
list your bookmarks and search through your annotations.
BTW, gnus-bookmark.el has been in the CVS for a while now, but there
is nothing on it in the Gnus manual. If people request it, I might
work on it this month. Some keybindings and menu items would be
also great.

It's done on the backend, but I need to do the following (no time yet):
- provide good frontend functionality (set/delete/list tags, plus some
way to see the tags in the summary view). This is 50% done.
- document this plus the other things gnus-registry.el does

As an aside, you or someone else could easily integrate gnus-bookmark.el
with the Gnus registry (it seems that it uses a special file now). The
registry allows you to store arbitrary data associated with a message
ID, so you could have a 'bookmark extra data entry. Let me know if
you're interested and I'll help you any way I can.

I'm really looking forward this.
I'm using org-mode to integrate my Gnus emails into my workflow. For
now, I'm just calling `org-remember' in the summary buffer: it adds a
reference to the email in my Org file -- which is fine, most of the
time.
For me, a better system would be one that lets me add a TODO label to
the email, then let an org-mode task refer to all TODO labeled emails.
I'm quite acquainted with Org.el and could perhaps help in making it
aware of gnus-registry labels.

Good idea. I'll work on gnus-bookmark this week-end, I let you know if
I need help about the latest functions in gnus-registry.el.
Thanks!

Currently I don't keep a reverse cache by flag, so you'd have to go
through the whole registry to find the articles with a particular flag.
This can be corrected, if you think it's necessary. I already do this
reverse caching by subject and by sender for example, and update the
reverse cache when message IDs are added or deleted.
