This hasn't been the case since 5.10, which switched to, IIRC, rmail files
as the intermediate format.  However, if your mail delivery system
delivers to an mbox, you'll still see this.  You'll need a mail delivery
system that delivers to something like a Maildir, or you'll need to use
IMAP.
