I figured it out.  I still had an older bit of elisp defined for mu4e
(setting the send-mail-function to 'smtpmail-async). Getting rid of that
and making sure that send-mail-function was correctly set to
'smtpmail-multi-send-it got it working under Ma Gnus.

(Not sure how it somehow managed to work right under 5.13.)
