I use Gnus also for reading (part of) my gmail. Sometimes I get a
message can not connect to server. When leaving Gnus and starting it
again, there is no problem. What could be happening here?

I am not sure, but maybe it has to do something with a time-out. When it
happens it has taken once more as 30 minutes to get new news, which
normally takes not 30 seconds. (I defined a daemon that checks every 30
minutes for mail/articles when Emacs is idle.)
