my pleasure.  The biggest problem that i have is a lack of messages
that fail in that manner to test with.  :/

I guess Gnus is trying to use something like links or w3m for rendering
html messages, but you are using an incompatible (perhaps too old)
version of this program, which doesn't understand the -dump options
Gnus gives it.
Try M-x customize-variable <ret> mm-text-html-renderer <ret>
