I think you missed the parts "in a certain group" and "in the group
parameters" in William's posting.

I think his setup should work, but a quite quick test showed that it
doesn't work for me neither.  I didn't have time to investigate it
further, though.

It displays it in X, but not on a UTF-8 terminal, even though the
terminal is capable of displaying this and Emacs/Gnus are able to
display some other non-ASCII characters on that terminal.

UTF-8 support in Emacs sucks. It covers only a small subset of
characters.

Tchah,  allow me to jump on my own head this once - from the Gnus manual

It's a Chinese poem. It says:

     What are scenes in the mountains? 
     To name a few with clear clouds over the tops!
     It's a pity I can't take and send them to you,
     but from enjoying them I am peacefully delighted. 

(Well, it is, of course, just an interpretation, not a translation,
absolutely. )
