A solution might be to run some NNTP proxy or minimal NNTP server like
leafnode (http://www.leafnode.org). Then you can set the expiration
times yourself, as long as you check in with the server more frequently
than it's expiration time (which can be automated). If the server is
really wacko it might not help, though.
