I am finding that groups appear on my list of groups which I have
not
subscribed to. Why is this? For example since adding the gmane server
I
am seeing things like this
appear:
nntp+news.gmane.io:gwene.com.biblia-arabica.news
which is a group I did not subscribe
to.

You can set `gnus-check-new-newsgroups' to nil to shut this behavior
off. Or see the "New Groups" section of the Gnus manual to configure it
to something more specific.
