Here is a screenshot of how my gnus summary window looks like. I wonder
whats with all the stars * there. Anybody have any idea ?

Yes, this is trunk from yesterday !
and I have this in my .gnus.el
(setq gnus-balloon-face-0 'rs-gnus-balloon-0)
(setq gnus-balloon-face-1 'rs-gnus-balloon-1)
