As an addendum- IIRC setting smtpmail-default-smtp-server on my OS X
computer caused Gnus to fail to send messages.

You have installed the FLIM package -- it's incompatible with the
standard Emacs (and Gnus) smtpmail.el.  So, get rid of it.

Maybe you should report to the NetBSD maintainers that they shouldn't
make people install the FLIM package by default.
