Resent (alpha) versions of Gnus provide an `unseen mark' (a `.' by
default) indicating that you haven't seen this article yet.

The usual method in Gnus is to use `catchup'. The idea is that you
won't read the old messages anyway, so you just mark them as read.

Instead of exiting a group with `q', use `c'. This marks as read all
messages in it.
