no :-/
But I did another thing:
Logged on as another user, copied ./xemacs/.init.el and .gnus from my
"oswald" directory (this is my normal user for day to day-work as this
is a single user-pc) and started XEmacs and gnus this time no problems.
I have a hunch that the problem could be in .newsrc or the like,
because as "oswald" I even started gnus without the .gnus-file and I
still got the same error.

I looked at .newsrc and the first entry had a leading dot in its name.
I removed this complete line.
The funny thing is when I start gnus without loading .gnus manually
via M-x load-file RET .gnus RET, gnus starts now without any problems
but _all_ my _subscibed_ groups, mail as well as news are _gone_.
those are in fact all groups:
1: news.announce.newusers (m)
45: news.groups.questions
189: gnu.emacs.gnus
9: nndoc+gnus-help:gnus-help
4: nndraft:drafts
now if I load .gnus first and then start gnus then all my subscribed
groups are displayed.
Do I need to tell .Xemacs to load the .gnus file in ~/.xemacs/init.el
I just _hate_ to go over each group and set all custom-setting again.
But if this is the _only_ way, well :-(
thanks for your help.
