When I subscribe to newsgroups in server-mode in Gnus 5.10.2, they are
added to the list with `nntp+SERVER:' prepended. These groups are not
checked for new news as the other groups, but only when I enter them. I
find this inconvenient. Is there something about this that I have
missed?

Okay, sounds like a bug. Please use M-x gnus-bug RET to report it.
