This work around is good enough for me now unless someone knows how to fix the error properly or at least work out why the DNS is not working for gnus (it works for Galeon, Pan (oh, heresy! but I got sick of gnus not starting properly and I didn't want to restart xemacs) etc. Thanks Jonathan
