Gnus 5.13
One line in /etc/mime.types is
image/jpeg jpe jpeg jpg
However it does not appear to be "working" for gnus. Specifically,
I have a mail msg with the line

[-- Type: application/octet-stream, Size: 29724 bytes --]

I think the line does not match your mime preferences since it is
declared as the undefined application/octet-stream class instead of
image/jpeg.
The sender is at fault, not you. You can still open it by pressing "v"
when you are over the link, and then selecting your favourite image
viewer.
