By default, gnu is to place the latest article at the end of the list,
while the oldest at the beginning. Is there any way to reverse it?

You really should start to look in the manual :-)
Case in (at?) point:

(I think showing the oldest first - so you naturally read the
articles/emails in the order they were written is more logical
(especially when articles/emails you have read aren't shown), but of
course your milage may vary).
