Subject: enriched mode in gnus?

Hello
Is it possible to use enriched mode for mail/messages sent by gnus?
I just turned on enriched mode and tried to use facemenu-set-bold, but
the corresponding region got all sort of strange characters added.
I must add that enriched mode works fine in non mail/messages
buffer/files.
The manual does not give any hint.
