Subject: gnus makes Subject into 2 strings whereas mmencode makes one

Odd, when I send the Chinese Subject of my message
<87fzsz2b49.fsf@jidanni.org> to mmencode I get sKitXqRFsHSzr6Tl030=
but gnus apparently makes that line into two parts:
Subject: 2004: =?big5?b?sKitXqRFsHSzr6Tl?= =?big5?b?030=?=
