	There was a glitch back when woody was still unstable, and the
 stand alone Gnus on Debian would install (and supersede the native
 5.9.0) on emacs21. Later versions of Gnus on Debian do not install
 for emacs21 (but would for emacs20 if you had both emacs20 and
 emacs21 on the same machine).

	I have not personally encountered situations (and I have both
 emacs20 and emacs21 on a machine for testing upgrades) where the
 Debian Gnus messed up. I would go back and look at the code again.
