I don't think so - I selected gnus from the debian woody packages sand
let apt-get/dselect install it.

If it was an install time problem would not the lock-out be there from
the start, instead of working fine for a while and then presenting me
wit the "*"?

This is exactly what I got
;;; Editing the group info for `nndraft:drafts'.

("nndraft:drafts" 1 nil nil
 (nndraft "")
 ((gnus-dummy

When I user "^", I got this

     {nnfolder:archive} (closed)
     {nndraft:} (opened)
     {nnml:} (opened)
     {nntp:news-text.blueyonder.co.uk} (opened)

When I use "O" the box beeps at me, so I think that I am not doing
what you want and I may have misunderstood you.

I am also loath to upgrade outside the Debian Woody packages. My
newness is an all round thing, and I want stable and when I need help
with something else, I can say the box is exclusivly Debian stable and
any problem lies within that sphere.

OK. I am not sure what this entails as I was under the impression that
by keeping both "within" and "up-to-date" with Woody that all the
pieces would all fit together.

If it comes to byte-compiling, what shoud I be reading first to make
sure I am understanding what I am doing and why?

It always amazes me how much I enjoy having problems. They are always
the times I learn the most :-)

Hm. `G <backspace>' or `G <delete>', perhaps?

Is it empty? If not, what's in it?

OK I did that, and the message was saved, but the "*" persists after
the search for new mail.......

.....however, 2 things struck me when I looked in the folder

1: there was no .overview file created as there is with mail
           messages. Is this normal?
2: the message was saved with the file name "14", wheras I
would have expected to see the filename "1". Is there an
index ofthis folder somewhere, and could the problem be the
           wherabouts of messages "1-13"?

I'm just dying to know the solution!

It saves the article into ~/News/dreaft/drafts with the next number as
the file name, but it is *still* has "*" against it in the Groups menu

I get "nndrafts: draft error:" in the status mini-buffer

I think I mentioned something in another mesage in this thread that I
was hoping for a comment on, so I shall re-state them here

Well, in order to confuse matters a little further, for no discernible
reason *another* flaw has appeared. I am aware of changing nothing
since yesterday, but regrettably the space bar is misbehaving!

When in "Groups" the space bar takes me into the group and through
the messages, when one group has no more unread messages, it moves you
on to the next group, and so no. That was yesterday

Today when the last message in a group is read the mini-buffer
displays "No more unread messages". It does not change to the next
group. It is not the end of the world, but it is wrong, and nothing I
am aware of has changed since yesterday when it was working as
advertised!

I mention it here in case the two problems are symptoms of something
else. I really don't like that it does different things on different
days. Your thoughts?

No. Debian supply gnus as emacs 20 is also part of the stable
distribution and as it wasnt advised against, I assumed I needed gnus,
so I downloaded it. That consequently took presedence over the gnues
that is internal to emacs21

There was a glitch back when woody was still unstable, and the
stand alone Gnus on Debian would install (and supersede the native
5.9.0) on emacs21. Later versions of Gnus on Debian do not install
for emacs21 (but would for emacs20 if you had both emacs20 and
 emacs21 on the same machine).

I have not personally encountered situations (and I have both
emacs20 and emacs21 on a machine for testing upgrades) where the
Debian Gnus messed up. I would go back and look at the code again.
