Er, the patch should be added to the .emacs with the defun quoted by an
apostrophe as follows:

(eval-after-load "nnimap"
  '(defun nnimap-open-connection (server) ...))

instead of

(eval-after-load "nnimap"
  (defun nnimap-open-connection (server) ...))

as pointed out in my previous posting.
