Subject: filter on two parameters at once?

I have a lot of mail in my inbox. I do any complicated searches with
notmuch, but sometimes I want to quickly pull up a recently read message
that has been hidden.
Doing / o and then / a is very slow (the / o bit).
Doing / t -1 doesn't show hidden messages and doing / o afterwards seems to
be just as slow as doing it before the /t -1
Is there a quicker way?
Cheers
