REPOST as message has not shown up

It is possible this problem may be a gnus problem, xemacs problem,
gentoo problem or
something else.

I have set followups to gnu.emacs.gnus as the problem relates to gnus,
but please overide as neccessary.

Problem essentialy is after no problems running gnus I no longer can.

Running gentoo, Xemacs version 21.4.22

(setq load-path (cons "~/ngnus-0.6/lisp" load-path))
(require 'gnus-load)

Now the first question is should I be able to run ngnus 0.6 under xemacs
21.4.22? in particular should I get any "can not open load file: timer "
messages or similar about mail-utils.

I am assuming an update has broken something somewhere as when I last
fired up gnus a couple of weeks ago things were working fine. I think
xemacs has been updated in the portage tree (which is why I wonder if
the problem could be xemacs or gentoo related,)

I have tried a few things to fix it.

I tried renaming .gnus to see if there was a problem in .gnus maybe I
changed something and forgot, no change here.

I tried running as root did get a different start message problem
loading mail-utils as opposed to timer.

Found a gnus 5.8.6 on this partition and tried to run this, got the can
not load file: mail-utils error (not the timer error) switched back

Tried rebuilding gnus

/configure && make EMACS=xemacs

I then tried running as gnu-emacs, recompiled gnus for emacs and fixed
the add-menu-item in .gnus that caused an error in startup under gnu
emacs and now it starts.

So I then tried recompilimg for xemacs.

but did observe the following during compilation.
hile compiling toplevel forms in file /home/*****/ngnus-0.6/lisp/utf7.el:
!! File error (("Cannot open load file" "timer"))

Further looking revealed this errror for numerous files all referencing
timer.

Found an old copy of xemacs 21.4.21 and tried compiling that, as it has
been some time since I compiled xemacs it is possible I missed something
but to the best of my knowledge ther is no option under ./configure
that is essential for running gnus, if there is I will add it in and try
recompilimg it, though running under xemacs 21.4.21 does not work.

I also don't seem to be getting any output from (setq debug-on-error t)

it just says loading gnus and does nothing.

which does differ from the output with debugging off, but not realy useful.

I have tried copying files over from gnu emacs, to the lisp direcory and
each time I copy a file the error message changes.

I have also tried re emerging xemacs with all use flags enabled, again
no success.

It looks like you haven't had the recent xemacs-base package
installed. Otherwise, loading timer-funcs.elc may have failed
for some reason. (See mm-util.el, that utf7.el loads.)

I recommend you to make sure that all the XEmacs packages are new.
FYI, the most recent No Gnus is available in:

ftp://ftp.gnus.org/pub/gnus/snapshots/

many thanks it gives me some ideas to look at.

Gentoo has xemacs-base as 2.19 and gnus has been working fine in the past,

http://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/packages/

has xemacs-base as 2.19 13 Jan 09 This could hardly be called recent
being a year old and is straight from the xemacs site. What version is
the latest xemacs-base? However it is masked in gentoo which would be
using 2.10 in the stable branch.

I have just downloaded the xemacs-base 2.19 from the above

timer-funcs.el is there but I don't see mm-util.el or utf7.el

are they supposed to be in xemacs-base ?

I have /usr/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/lisp/gnus
which has mm-util.el and utf7.el but as I copied some of the files over
that were missing I can not be sure if they were there before

I will need to unmerge somethings as it is getting difficult to
determine what has been added by gentoo and what manualy added.

I have unmerged everything related to xemacs that shows up on the
system, deleted any other xemacs related files, re emrged xemacs 21.4.22
re emerged the xemacs-base package 2.10 as 2.19 is marked as unstable on
gentoo xemacs-packages-all 2007.04.27-r1 version on gentoo. and
recompiled gnus version 0.6 as I seem to have deleted the Makefile from
0.10 and 0.6 was working fine before.

And now it works. not sure why or what changed though.

One other thing which should probably be in an xemacs group though I
don't like to transfer an open thread to another group.

I should be able to update xemacs packages through the internal xemacs
packaging system however it complains about not finding nslookup.
nslookup is defined as depreciated on gentoo. I could probably manualy
add it in which might work, but could xemacs be set to use a differnt
program I have hostx but the arguments and data returned would be
different. I did try (setq efs-nslookup-program "hostx") on the hopefull
ideas this may work, it does not.

Have found a nother webaite which says nslookup is under bind-tools
Have installed that and the update package system seems to be working

xemacs-base 2.10 is new enough for building Gnus, I believe. My
second guess is that your XEmacs doesn't know the path in which
timer-funcs.elc can be found. Consult the result of the following
operations:

$ cd /home/*****/ngnus-0.6/
$ ./configure --with-emacs=xemacs-21.4.22
$ xemacs-21.4.22 -batch -no-autoloads -l lisp/dgnushack.el -eval '(message "%s" load-path)'

Is there the directory in which the xemacs-base package has been
installed? Or isn't there an old xemacs-base directory that shadows
the new one?

> I have just downloaded the xemacs-base 2.19 from the above

Probably you have to upgrade not only the xemacs-base package but
also all the other packages. FYI, the most recent XEmacs packages
that have not been packed into SUMO yet are in:

ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/xemacs/beta/experimental/packages/
or http://ftp.xemacs.org/xemacs/beta/experimental/packages/
