* how can i see french letters in new group

when i use gnus to read new group such as 
 fr.lettres.langue.francaise
some french letters look like \ 323 i.e. a slash and some numers
how can i see the correct letters?

This works for me, though I'm not sure iso-8859-15 is a right choice.

(add-to-list 'gnus-group-charset-alist '("\\(^\\|:\\)fr\\>" iso-8859-15))
