well, it has been a loooong day ;), but here are the results. I executed
the following commands:
~% /usr/bin/emacs -q --no-site-file -d $DISPLAY
M-x server-start
M-x gnus
~% /usr/bin/emacsclient -d $DISPLAY -n -e '(new-frame)'
As long as $DISPLAY has the same value for both, emacs and emacsclient,
everything seems to work as expected. But if you start emacsclient
through an ssh session for example it sees a different value for
$DISPLAY. In this case the group buffer disappears.
