As so often happens: As soon as you tell somebody about it, you find a
solution.  I manually edited .newsrc.eld and shortened
gnus-newsrc-alist significantly (The only entry I left was the
``drafts'' entry) .  That made .newsrc.eld about one megabyte shorter,
and now everything works like a charm :-)
