Subject: Making old agent news available again
Date: Mon, 20 Jan 2003 20:34:01 +0000	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <m1smvnh87a.fsf@chezmarshall.freeserve.co.uk> (raw)

(running Oort v0.12)

Before I ran leafnode, I used gnus-agent and have a fair number of
articles still in ~/News/agent/nntp/, until a few Oorts ago I used to
be able to access them but the way now seems barred :-(

The agent server is news.freeserve.net and oort appears to want to
connect to that server before allowing me to look at the group - as I
don't use that newserver now its a bit tricky! it appears to complain
even if I'm running unplugged

I've tried both
    (gnus-agentize) and
    (setq gnus-agent t)

I eventually got in by making sure that if I was using the .newsrc
that applied to the agent database, I used the gnus that came with
emacs (5.9) rather than Oort

An unconnected question on agent:

before I set gnus-agent to nil _when accessing my localhost_, leafnode server
I acquired a 20meg ~/News/agent/nntp/localhost tree consisting
entirely of .agentview and .overview files, should I blow away the
hierarchy or do I need to run gnus-agent-expire sometimes?
presumably setting gnus-agent to t before attempting it?
