Hi,
I have a nnml group with many mails in it I want to export to a unix
mailbox file. After looking through the Gnus manual and then googling for it
I still came up empty handed. Probably I'm just using the wrong
keywords...
Any hints?

Does the following command work for you?
,----
| C-o runs the command gnus-summary-save-article-mail
| which is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `gnus-sum.el'.
| It is bound to C-o, O m, <menu-bar> <Article> <Output> <Save in Unix mail format...>.
| (gnus-summary-save-article-mail &optional arg)
|
| Append the current article to a Unix mail box file.
| If N is a positive number, save the N next articles.
| If N is a negative number, save the N previous articles.
| If N is nil and any articles have been marked with the process mark,
| save those articles instead.

...this got me a prompt for every single marked article, which got
bothersome quite soon. This actually was the point where I deciced to
ask...
Gnus 5.11, Emacs 22.0.50.1

Gnus wouldn't be Gnus if there wasn't an option to avoid this
annoyance:
,----[ (info "(gnus)Saving Articles") ]
| All these commands use the process/prefix convention (*note
| Process/Prefix::). If you save bunches of articles using these
| functions, you might get tired of being prompted for files to save each
| and every article in. The prompting action is controlled by the
| `gnus-prompt-before-saving' variable, which is `always' by default,
| giving you that excessive prompting action you know and loathe. If you
| set this variable to `t' instead, you'll be prompted just once for each
| series of articles you save. If you like to really have Gnus do all
| your thinking for you, you can even set this variable to `nil', which
| means that you will never be prompted for files to save articles in.
| Gnus will simply save all the articles in the default files.

Why didn't you say this in your first posting? ;-)
Bye, Reiner.

Ahh! I didn't read that node because I already knew
gnus-summary-save-article-mail (I use it now and then to archive single
articles)... I should have read it nevertheless.

Probably because I thought it obvious that I tried that before? ;-)
Thanks for the enlightment,

Respooling the articles should help. Mark all articles and then press
B-m.

Thanks, I will try that if I need to do it again. For now I've just used
formail on the files in the group directory, worked fine.

(while Gnus can copy/move the articles natively, it's nice to
understand how to do the job from the command line)
You should be able to just do "cat * > mbox_file" I think. But you
need a blank line at the end of every message, so this should work:
ls | perl -ne 'chomp; open F, $_; print <F>; print "\n";' > mbox_file
see http://www.qmail.org/man/man5/mbox.html for more info on mbox files.
Try the first one first, before you do the complicated Perl one-liner
:)

Ack, it is also much faster than Gnus could ever be. Batch processing
isn't its forte.

I think this would break since Gnus rewrites the From_ lines into
X-From-Line headers and did From-unescaping.
I found the following command in my .bash_history:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
for f in nnml/foo/*; do
sed '1s/^X-From-Line:/From/;/^$/,$s/^>*From />&/' $f;
done > ~/mymbox
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
...which resulted in an mbox in MBOXRD format.

andreas

I finally did a
cat * | formail -ds >> mbox_file
Which worked fine (and fast).
