I have googled up various ways of getting my posts to include an xface :
so far with no positive result.
One such way was here :
http://my.gnus.org/node/215
Where my test post did have an x-face header of:
"X-Face: ptM<fx"*y+GE)aPkE92Lna&J#HS%%~;vRT[]("4j?Lsw;}c))xi=$-H&1nWWB?KxN%A|0)I"
but nothing showed up in gnus when I fetched new news and read the
post. Other peoples xfaces are displaying fine.
I got the header file from using the online converter referenced at the
above url and pointing to to a local gif file I have.
So, my question is : How do you include an xface in emacs 21.4 and gnus 5.10.7?
There are loads of different ways in google but no apparent "master
supported way" : it was all quite confusing to be honest.
thanks for any help.

But the face in this current posting is different from the one in the
previous and less, er, facey and looking slightly random.

another xface "token" was inserted judging by the headers.

Do you have uncompface installed and in your PATH? (I noticed that
this was missing in my local installation while reading this thread.)

Weird. Do you see other Faces or X-Faces or both?

There is no uncompface on my ubuntu setup.
It seems that my emacs can show "Face: " but not "X-Face: " : the online
programs to generate X-Face data generate "X-Face: XaB" data which is
not compatible with the "Face:" header line. e.g I can see nice pictures
for other posts with a "Face: " header (not "X-Face: "), but if I do the
same with data generated by, for example,
http://www.dairiki.org/xface/xface.php
then the picture "place" shows up in my posts but no valid picture is
contained therein.
Any ideas?
I really can't figure this out and I just know that I'm missing
something straightforward.

I only see "Face"s. e.g I saw your gnu. How did you generate it? What is
in your .gnus.el?

Take a look at the Gnus manual [1].
Unless your version of Emacs has compiled-in compface support, you
should either get a binary package for your system or compile it from
source [2].

And just for google completeness, here is a lightly harder to find online
x-face creation program which gives previews :

Check this: `C-h v gnus-article-x-face-too-ugly RET'
This variable name makes me snigger every time...

You can use compface.el under contrib dir of Gnus to view x-face without
external program needed.
