For the subscribe parameter, the customize buffer produced by
M-x gnus-group-customize RET says:

,----
| If `gnus-subscribe-newsgroup-method' or
| `gnus-subscribe-options-newsgroup-method' is set to
| `gnus-subscribe-topics', new groups that matches this regexp will
| automatically be subscribed to this topic
`----

So I guess you need to set g-s-n-m, which defaults to
'gnus-subscribe-zombies'.
