Hello !
Gnus seems inefficient on my setup: when I enter in a group with 5
messages or more (about), I have to wait for several seconds before
getting the messages.
Here is my setup:
(setq
gnus-summary-make-false-root 'none
gnus-fetch-old-headers 'some
gnus-build-sparse-threads 'some)
I have sniffed the connection and Gnus only issues this command :
XOVER 1-8463
Getting the headers for 8643 articles seems a bit excessive regarding
the fact that I ask just "some" old headers. How to optimize this ?

No, that's the documented behavior.

You could defadvice the group entry functions to compute that, I
guess...
