In the group buffer, position on group and hit G c

Note that the Expire Wait entry is Never.
   That is the default.  If not Never, make it so.

Cursor back to the top line, on [Done] and hit <enter>

Now even a mail marked E will stick around forever.



However, you can do useful things like set the Expiry Target to an
archive group (instead of delete) and set Expire Wait to 30 days.
Enable the Total Expire option.  Enable the Display option and set to
All.  

Make sure the Expire Wait of the archive group is Never!  Any mail not
hand deleted by 30 days will be moved to the archive.  Rotate the
archives every year.
