Perhaps I am missing this in the manuals, but I cannot figure out what I
need to do to reconfigure Gnus to open attachments with certain select
other programs. I would prefer to do this on some attachments rather
than saving the attachments to a temporary folder before viewing, and
subsequently deleting them.
Would any be so kind as to explain the necessaries for me?

Use the .mailcap file:
image/*; gimp -8 %s
audio/wav; wavplayer %s
