hello.  i'm having the problem of slow initial connection to the nntp
backend which tech support at the ISP is trying to figure out.

running gnus v5.7

in the meantime, i'm wondering if there's a way to have gnus ping the
backend somehow in order to prevent the connection from closing.

didn't notice such a feature in the docs but may have overlooked
something do to the complexity.
