I'm not certain what I've done, but I've restarted Xemacs and I still
cannot exit from my "spam" folder.
Any ideas what's happening here? There is no message 8743. There are
no 87xx numbers in that directory at all.

Just for the record, the fix is to run nnml-generate-nov-databases
in that broken directory.

If you install Gnus via the XEmacs package system then the answer to
ShengHuo's question is "no". You don't compile it at all because you
are installing a pre-compiled package.
