Hello,

if I use emacsclient to connect to an emacs instance (version 23.2.1)
with Gnus (No Gnus 0.9) running in it, the *Group* buffer
disappears. That seem to happen only if I start emacsclient with the -d
parameter. My work around at the moment is to save the remaining
newsrc-dribble file and restart Gnus. Any hints on this?

Regards
hmw

So something kills the *Group* buffer when you start emacsclient? That
sounds very, very strange. You're sure you don't have any local code
that does this?

jepp, that is what it looks like.

Well, I changed from XEmacs (with a working configuration) to Emacs a
few moons ago. In the process I adapted the configuration files, changed
from gnuclient to emacsclient etc. So the local code might be OK...,
modulo some strange side effects. To be sure I will check with a minimal
local config tonight.

well, it has been a loooong day ;), but here are the results. I executed
the following commands:

~% /usr/bin/emacs -q --no-site-file -d $DISPLAY
M-x server-start
M-x gnus
~% /usr/bin/emacsclient -d $DISPLAY -n -e '(new-frame)'

As long as $DISPLAY has the same value for both, emacs and emacsclient,
everything seems to work as expected. But if you start emacsclient
through an ssh session for example it sees a different value for
$DISPLAY. In this case the group buffer disappears.

no, that's not what I said ;). I said that the *Group* buffer disappears
if I execute that given sequence with the constraint that $DISPLAY
changes. I don't point directly on new-frame ;). By disappear I mean
that the buffer isn't in the (refreshed) buffer list anymore. I can't
jump to that buffer anymore.

I can understand your objection, I too don't understand what's
going on here. I use the original Debian package of Emacs. Maybe I
should compile Emacs from scratch for test?
