I would check to make sure that the British dictionary is installed
properly. On all redhat installations that I have used I have had to
mess with the hash and multi files in /usr/lib/ispell or
/usr/lib/aspell depending on versions. This just involved creating
links to point British to English or vice versa. i can't remember!

After that, can't help really.
