Whenever I reply to a message of Kai G (and some others) I get
queried about what charset I want to use. If I hit <enter> I get
queried once more. Hitting <enter> the second time seems to satisfiy
the query and the mail is sent.

What can I set so that I never get queried about charset?

What's the way to make names more readable?...
Instead of readable names, names appear something like

Adam[space][=][?][iso-8859-1][?][q][?][right square bracket]

hobbes@easynet.be [left parenthesis][=][?][iso-8859-15][?][q][?][R=E9mi][?][=][space][Letot][right parenthesis]

Kai.Grossjohann@CS.Uni-Dortmund.DE (Kai
[space][=][?][iso-8859-15[?][q][?][Gro][=][DFjohann][?][=][right parenthesis]

Your Gnus is ancient. Upgrade to some 5.8 version (or 5.9, the one that
comes with Emacs 21), and everything will be fine.

i've switched off mule and thus confined it to one character-set at a
time, so this variable actually saves me from some typing ;)

this should be the best solution anyway.
