What's wrong with "cd texi; make refcard.pdf"?

This is not the right file.

It's the refcard for Emacs 21.3 to be processed using "tex refcard".

The Gnus tarball contains the right one:

$ tar -ztvf gnus-5.10.6.tar.gz | grep gnusref
-rw-r--r-- larsi/larsi   54680 2003-11-29 13:38:46 gnus-5.10.6/texi/gnusref.tex

After unpacking the tarball and doing ./configure, "cd texi; make
refcard.pdf" should create refcard.pdf.

Bye, Reiner.
