Trying to use the variable:

  gnus-total-expirable-newsgroups

Using customize buffer.  Everything I try breaks out 

For example:  `spam1$'  fails.

It claims to be looking for a regex.... is it some bizarre kind of
regex known only to gnus?

I doesn't fail for me.  Would do you mean with "breaks out"?
