Maybe you can tell Gnus to display the text/plain part of such
messages.  (add-to-list 'mm-discouraged-alternatives "text/html")

Or you can use w3m and w3m_el instead of W3 to display HTML.  You can
install the two packages and then (setq mm-text-html-renderer 'w3m).

(It's also possible to use lynx and links in a similar way.)
