I don't know the answer but I can tell you that it works (at least it
should work). I have a Courier IMAP server on woody and the articles in
my spam-folder expire regularly, according to my settings:

(setq gnus-parameters
      '(
;; [...]
;; Spam-folder ------------------
	("^nnimap.*:INBOX\\.spam"
	 (auto-expire . t)
	 ;; delete after 14 days
	 (expiry-wait . 14.0)
;; [...]
	 )))
