At a guess, you are trying to use a personalized hook based on that
variable, which doesn't exist until the "message" module is loaded.

To find out what has happened, mutter M-x set-variable RET
debug-on-error RET t RET then retrieve an article, get the stack
trace, save the stack trace, post the stack trace for us to see.
