Have a look at smtpmail.el which is part of the mail-lib package in
case you're using xemacs. Something like
; (require 'smtpmail)
; (setq send-mail-function 'smtpmail-send-it
; message-send-mail-function 'smtpmail-send-it
; smtpmail-smtp-server "smpt.domain.tld"
; smtpmail-smtp-service "smtp"
; smtpmail-local-domain "domain.tld"
; smtpmail-debug-info t
; smtpmail-code-conv-from nil)
should get you started.
