I have decided that reading crossposts probably is not worth it. So,
how do I reliably kill them? My feeble experiments on killfiles have
had no effect so far. Any help thus appreciated.

I assume you're talking about newsgroup postings. Investigate the
variable `gnus-use-cross-reference'.
If you're actually talking about mail, see the variable
`nnmail-crosspost'.

Score on the Xref header and the number of ':' you see in it.
I have a score on the ".*:.*:.*:.*:.*:.*" regexp to lower posts
crosposted in more than 5 groups. If you mant no crosspost at all you
can score or kill just on ':'
