I had the same problem a few days ago with
(emacs-version)
"XEmacs 21.4 (patch 10) \"Military Intelligence\" [Lucid] (i586-pc-win32) of Wed Nov 06 2002 on D5DC120J"
and
gnus-version
"Gnus v5.8.8"
and your suggested method worked.
