What might be tried next to get out of the predicament?...

Trying to start up gnus when there's email pending,
the incoming email went to /home/dsaklad/Mail/Incoming5565egA
and appearing in the very bottom line of the emacs window is the
following incomplete report

Characters in the report that might not appear visibly here are series
of question mark characters, exclamation points and control characters
with the double quotation mark on the left of them and the double
quotation mark on the right. There's also DEEE+Dbackslash207
just before the right double quotation mark.
