Hm.  I know something that might be related.  The latest verison of INN,
which I just released, fixed a bug whereby users who weren't allowed to
read a group could still get article counts from LIST ACTIVE with the
group name, even though with LIST ACTIVE without the group name, the group
wouldn't appear.

I wonder if Gnus wasn't using that loophole without intending to to get
article numbers, and now when LIST ACTIVE is failing, Gnus isn't leaping
to the conclusion that this is because of missing authentication.

Harry, is the server running INN 2.3.4 or a recent STABLE snapshot?

It looks like INN 2.3.4 may do something annoying like returning an empty
list.
